The most comprehensive transportation strategy for traveling in Washington, a practical transportation guide to Washington
Posted on 3/16/2026
Description
Washington Travel Arrival and Departure Airport: Dulles International Airport (IAD): Located in Virginia, west of Washington, it is the largest airport in Washington and is the hub of United Airlines (UA). This airport has free Wi-Fi. The main terminal is divided into two floors with departures on the upper floor, and different airlines are divided into 4 zones (ZONE). On the lower arrival level, there are 14 baggage carousels with 6 exit doors, in addition to the separately enclosed international arrivals area. Each exit door has an upward slope leading to the private car pick-up level, and a downward slope leading to the public ground transportation level. Unless there is a special person to pick you up, you will go down the slope. Taxis, buses, various shuttle buses (hotels, remote parking lots, car rental companies, etc.), and the terminal short-term parking lot are all here. It's a bit messy but they are all marked with signs. The plane is divided into two waiting areas, inner and outer, similar to the 1 platform (inside) and 2 platforms (outside) of a train station. Chaih Hotel has a free shuttle bus. From the website, you can know the waiting location, such as 2H, 2G, etc., which refers to the outer H/G area on the ground floor. If some people mistakenly think it is on the second floor, they will never be able to wait for the shuttle bus. Information Desk: Come out of the Dulles Airport exit and keep going forward (there are many exits at the airport, please don't leave if you are directed to the parking lot, etc.). When you reach exits 7 and 8 (at this time, you are almost at the end), there will be an Information Desk, which contains all free DC maps, guides, subway line maps, bus line maps and many other travel information leaflets or brochures. There are staff at the counter who can answer questions. Taxis (WashingtonFlyer monopoly), take a taxi from IAD to the city, about $50-65. There is a small surcharge per person for more than one person. Airport bus (Washington Flyer) runs from Gate 4 of the IDA main terminal to the West Falls Church Station subway station. It runs every 30 minutes. The fare is $10 one way and $18 round trip. Metrobus Line 5A goes directly from IAD Airport to Rosslyn Subway Station or the terminal L’Enfant Plaza Subway Station. The fare is $6. If you use the SmartTrip card when transferring to the subway, you will get a 50 cent discount on the subway part. Airport minibus (SuperShuttle monopoly, blue 10-passenger minibus) provides services from the airport to any home or hotel and other specific locations (airport door to home). $30/person, $5/person for companions, and a 10-15% tip is required. Passengers traveling in the same direction will be put into the same car, and the car will drive when there are 6 to 7 passengers. If the first one takes you to your destination, it’s not much different from a taxi. If the last one takes you, you have to comfort yourself and count it as a sightseeing car (appearance of hotel/residence/street view). Due to their monopoly, other taxis/airport minibuses (the most common ones are the yellow Maryland Shuttle, phone number 301-230-000) cannot take passengers away after dropping off passengers at the airport, but they can pick up passengers upon request. Many people did not want to return without a load, so they parked in the short-term parking lot in front of the terminal building and quietly solicited customers. If you are traveling with several people, you may wish to send someone to walk a few steps to the parking lot to check. If you meet someone, the fare can be negotiated. Unlike domestic airports, IAD does not have free luggage trolleys except for international arrivals. There is a fee of $3/cart to pick up luggage trolleys at the drop-off area on the departure level and the luggage carousel on the arrivals level. Outside the arrivals level, or in the short-term parking lot in front of the terminal, there are always luggage trolleys that others have used and you can "borrow" them. Most airports are like this. There is another general security checkpoint (and an IAD employee security checkpoint) near the baggage carousel No. 8 on the arrival (lower) floor. Only frequent flyers know about it. It is less crowded and faster than the main security checkpoint on the departure (upper) floor. The airport light rail is under construction and there is currently no direct way to reach it. The outer 3/4 section is almost completed with roadbed and bridge construction, but the 1/4 section at the airport has not yet started construction, because whether the airport station should be built outside the main terminal (saving hundreds of millions of dollars) or directly into the main terminal (more convenient) is still being debated. According to the usual American pace, this project may not be completed by the time China starts its next five-year plan. However, China's infrastructure may have been demolished and rebuilt once or twice in the past hundred or so years, while the US infrastructure is still contributing waste heat. Long-distance buses: Other large cities in the East have long-distance buses to Washington (many operators operate them). It is very convenient to travel to and from New York (including Newark, New Jersey), Boston, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and Washington. It only costs a few dollars to get to Washington from Chinatown, New York, which is cheaper than the toll of driving by car. Train: Amtrak also runs between Boston, New York/Newark, Philadelphia, and Washington. The normal price is higher, about US$80 or more from New York (NYP) to Washington (WAS), but there are often discounts, and you can buy it on the same day or the day after tomorrow. As an experience or an emergency one-way trip, you can consider it. Amtrak has its own system of abbreviating train station names, which may be a bit difficult for those unfamiliar with it. Washington travel starts immediately: Reminder: Don’t rush to remit money or pay a deposit before seeing the real thing to avoid being cheated. Other food-travel related pictures
