Exploring Chinese Ingredients in New York

As a long-time resident of New York, I’ve gotten pretty familiar with where to find Chinese ingredients around the city. Whether you’re in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Flushing, there are plenty of spots to grab fresh ingredients for your home-cooked Chinese meals.

Chinatown in Manhattan

In Manhattan’s Chinatown, one of my go-to places is the little market near **Fuzhou Restaurant**. The prices here are quite reasonable; for vegetables and tofu, you’re looking at about $2 to $5. They also have my favorite **pickled mustard greens**—perfect for fried rice!

Supermarkets in Flushing

If you’re in Flushing, make sure to check out **Great Wall Supermarket**. This supermarket is huge and has a vast selection. I often buy fresh seafood there, usually around $10 to $15 per pound. They also stock a variety of sauces and dried goods, like **Doubanjiang** (spicy broad bean paste) and star anise. You’ll find just about everything you need.

Chinese Stores in Brooklyn

In Brooklyn’s **Sunset Park**, I recommend visiting **Hwa Ying Supermarket**. The prices here are generally cheaper, and they have a lot of dried goods and frozen foods, like spring roll wrappers and dumpling skins, ranging from $3 to $6. If you're planning to make dumplings, don’t forget to grab some fresh ground meat!

Helpful Tips

  • **Plan Ahead**: Before heading out, make a list of the ingredients you need to avoid wasting time and money.
  • **Talk to the Staff**: If you’re unsure where to find a specific ingredient, just ask the staff. They’re usually very helpful.
  • **Price Comparison**: Different stores can vary a lot in price, so it’s worth it to check a few places.

  • In New York’s Chinese community, the selection of ingredients is incredibly diverse. With these resources, you can cook authentic Chinese dishes right at home!
