# Family-Friendly Activities in Iowa
Living in Iowa has been a wonderful adventure for my family, especially when it comes to finding fun things to do together. As a Chinese-American in this beautiful state, I want to share some of my favorite family-friendly spots and activities that we've enjoyed over the years.
1. Iowa Zoo in Des Moines
One of our favorite places to visit is the Iowa Zoo, located right in Des Moines. The zoo has a variety of animals, and it’s a fantastic way for kids to learn and engage with wildlife. Admission is around $15, and they often have special events on weekends, like feeding times and chances to interact with some of the animals. The last time we went, my kids were thrilled to pet a goat and even got to see a baby giraffe!
2. George Washington Park in Iowa City
This park is a gem in Iowa City, featuring a large playground and plenty of green space for picnics. On weekends, you’ll see many families enjoying homemade lunches under the big trees. The playground is free, making it an economical choice for families. Bring a blanket and enjoy a lovely afternoon outdoors!
3. Iowa State Museum
If your little ones are interested in history, you must check out the Iowa State Museum. Tickets are about $8, and the exhibits on Iowa's history, especially the Native American displays, are fascinating. We usually spend a whole afternoon there, and my kids always walk away with something new and exciting to share.
4. Sports Activities
Iowa also offers many family-friendly sports activities, like ice skating and swimming. The YMCA in Des Moines provides various classes for kids of all ages. The costs typically range from $50 to $100, depending on the length and type of the class. It’s a great way to keep the kids active while having fun!
5. Attend Local Festivals
Every year, Iowa hosts numerous family-related festivals, such as the County Fair. Admission is usually around $10, which gives you access to a world of rides, food, and activities for kids. They love seeing the farm animals and enjoying the carnival atmosphere!
