# Cost of Living for Chinese in Delaware

Living in Delaware has its perks, especially when it comes to the cost of living. Having moved here in 2018, I can tell you that it’s quite affordable compared to nearby states like New York and New Jersey.

Housing Costs

Renting

In Delaware, particularly in areas like Wilmington and Newark, rent is relatively reasonable. A one-bedroom apartment usually runs about $1,200 to $1,600 a month. When I first moved in, I was amazed at how much more space I got compared to my tiny New York apartment.

Buying a Home

If you're considering buying, expect the prices to be higher. In Wilmington, homes typically range from $250,000 to $400,000, depending on the condition and location. It’s great for families looking to settle down without breaking the bank.

Daily Expenses

Food

As a Chinese person, food is a huge part of my life. In Delaware, grocery prices may be cheaper than in big cities. For instance, in Asian supermarkets, you can find rice and noodles for about $10-$20 per bag. Plus, there are many Chinese restaurants, like “Hua Wei Xiang” in Wilmington, where a decent meal costs around $10-$15.

Transportation

The public transport system in Delaware isn’t that extensive, so driving is often the best option. Gas prices are around $3.00-$3.50 per gallon, which can feel a bit pricey if you're used to city public transport. However, parking is relatively cheap, costing about $5-$10 for a day in the city center.

Entertainment and Leisure

Free Activities

Delaware has plenty of free activities, like strolling along the Delaware River or attending local cultural festivals. Not only do these events save money, but they also give you a sense of the local culture.

Shopping

If you love shopping, check out the Rehoboth Beach outlet malls. They have a lot of discount stores, usually cheaper than traditional malls. Every time I go, I manage to score some great deals.
