Preparing for College Applications
Applying to college in Chicago can feel a bit overwhelming, especially for us Chinese folks. But I want to share some personal experiences to help you navigate this process more smoothly.
Identifying Target Schools
First, it’s crucial to identify the schools you want to apply to. Chicago has several excellent universities, like the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). I recommend visiting the schools' websites to check their application requirements and costs.

Gathering Application Materials
You’ll need to prepare a variety of materials for your college applications, including recommendation letters, personal statements, and TOEFL or IELTS scores. In Chicago, many community schools and education centers offer free tutoring services. For instance, in Chinatown, there are teachers who can assist you with your applications.
Preparing for Interviews
Some schools require interviews. Be sure to prepare for common questions like, "Why did you choose this school?" or "What are your future plans?" Before my interviews, I would often go to a café in Wicker Park. The relaxed atmosphere helped me think clearly and practice my responses.
Community Resources
Chicago has numerous resources available for the Chinese community that can help you. For example, check out PandaListing (熊猫榜), where you can find many posts and information about educational resources. You might discover tutoring classes or other valuable advice.
Steps After Applying
Once you submit your application, it’s essential to be patient. Most schools will send out admission notifications in the spring. During this time, consider getting involved in community activities to enhance your personal experience. I participated in a cultural festival at Lincoln Park, which not only helped me make friends but also enriched my resume.
I hope these tips help my fellow Chinese friends applying to colleges in Chicago! Good luck!
