The BBQ Culture in Alaska
Having lived in Alaska for a few years now, I can confidently say that Chinese BBQ, or 烧腊, is one of my favorite foods. Our Chinese community here may not be huge, but our love for food is definitely big. Especially when I crave the flavors from home, nothing beats authentic BBQ.
Recommended BBQ Restaurants
1. Golden BBQ
Located on East Dimond Boulevard in Anchorage, Golden BBQ has become my go-to spot. Their char siu and roast goose are fantastic, with prices ranging from $10 to $15 for a generous serving. The atmosphere is simple, but the service is warm and friendly. The owner, a passionate Chinese immigrant, is always up for a chat.
2. Alaska Mountain Water BBQ
This place is famous and located on University Avenue in Fairbanks. Their roasted duck is a must-try, priced around $20. Every time I take friends there, everyone praises the duck for its tender meat and perfectly crispy skin.
3. Little Beijing BBQ
Little Beijing can be found on Willoughby Avenue in Juneau. The restaurant is small but serves some authentic roast meats and braised dishes. The prices are friendly too, with meals costing about $8 to $12 for a delicious roast meat combo. Their braised tofu is particularly outstanding, bringing me back for more.
